SCHOOL YEAR PROGRAMS:

During the school year each Boys & Girls Club can utilize Camp Kiwanis for outdoor education and group club activities.

L.I.N.K. (Leaders In Nature Kingdom):

A four year progressive Leadership Development Program for members ages 14 -18. L.I.T. (Leader in Training); F.I.T. (Facilitator in Training); A.L.O.T. (American Leader of Tomorrow) ; L.I.N.K. (Leaders In Nature Kingdom); end result of the 4 years of training - employment as a counselor, activity instructor or other qualified jobs.

Wilderness Challenge:

Designed to assist members in understanding their role in the group process, to critically look at their values, learn acceptable communication and problem solving skills, and to experience leadership roles. All these skills learned and experienced through backpacking, rock climbing, kayaking, canoeing or service projects.

Weekend Adventure:

Designed to give the Clubs the flexibility to chose between eight program models. They are: Beyond the Home Turf; Team Building/Conflict Resolution; The Ultimate Journey at Camp; Finding Your Way - Orienteering; Turn Un-Wanted into Wanted; Outdoor Survival is the Name of the Game; and You Decide - We Deliver. Each of the programs includes a in-depth menu planning guide.

Beyond the Home Turf - offers a wide variety of recreational activities. Using the program and menu guides the staff (facilitators) and youth can work together to plan a fun and challenging weekend. The activities include:  archery, canoeing, kayaking, outdoor cooking skills, night hikes, fishing, blow darts, ultimate frisbee, lacrosse, capture the flag, group initiate activities, volleyball, basic orienteering (treasure hunt), recyclers scavenger hunt, the making of solar watches and ovens, nature hikes and mountain biking.

Team Building/Conflict Resolution - this model incorporates very challenging - but fun activities. These activities assist participants in understanding their role in the group process, to critically look at their values, learn acceptable communication and problem solving skills, and to experience leadership roles. These in turn enhance the four senses (Belonging, Competence, Usefulness and Control over ones' own life). The activities are important because they allow us to get to the debriefing. The debriefing is really the heart of team building. This sharing allows them to evaluate self, be evaluated and learn to accept other points of view. The program last 10 to 12 hours and is designed to take into account the developmental (typical behavior patterns) age groups of 10-12, 13-15 or 16-18 year olds.

The Ultimate Journey at Camp uses our 160 acre camp as an outdoor laboratory to focus on people's impact on the environment. Each program is made up of sequenced activities aimed at certain learner outcomes. The program brings to life a topic such as the water cycle in a fun and hands-on manner. The instructor is a facilitator or coach that guides participants toward great self discoveries.

Finding Your Way - Orienteering - This program is set up for youth 12-18 years old. It consists of a fast paced hour and half "hands-on" instruction on learning the basics. Culminating in a 2 hour 0rienteering meet which uses a 1:5,000 topographic map of Camp Kiwanis. The orienteering meet consists of finding ten control points scattered through out a safe but challenging defined area. Proves you were there by punching your score card with the proper identification punch. It's like a treasure hunt and a road race all put together. It's FUN, challenging and satisfying!!!

Turn Un-Wanted into Wanted - These activities offer a variety of Nature Crafts to make and share. Through FUN "hands-on" activities we will challenge youth to create treasures from Mother Earth's kudzu patch. Plan on getting into your work - down and dirty. The projects include the making of a basket, candle, terrarium and Indian pottery. Then sit back and enjoy a hot cup of cocoa and roast a marshmallow or two as we warm ourselves by the campfire. Next for those who like an adventure we'll slip into the darkness to see who lurks out there. Top the weekend off by choosing to do a one hour solo, during the day, to reflect on your experiences and of new discovered friends.

Outdoor Survival is the Name of the Game -This program is for those who want to challenge nature on its own terms. You will build a group shelter, make a solar still for collecting drinking water, learn how to build a fire with and without matches, Learn how to make candles, bowls and find a cardinal direction "N" using a watch and most of all after you learn you get to put it to practice. You live in the shelter and eat cooked food if you can start a fire. Challenging - YES!

You Decide - We Deliver - Tailored Made Program to meet the interest of the group and the goals of the local Boys & Girls Club. The design can blend some recreation, team building and environmental education.

Madison County Middle School - "BLUESTONERS" - Adopt A Stream Program

Citizen and Leadership

Become a Leader In Nature Kingdom by attending the summer Leader In Training L.I.T.'s program. (call your Club for more details)  Recruiting will be the 2nd Saturday in September. Hours - 8:00 a.m. to 5 :00 p.m. Bring a Lunch and be set for an educational and fun day.

SUMMER RESIDENT CAMP

In every Camp activity, young people learn the importance of working together, believing in themselves and understanding each other. Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta believes these lessons are so important to the development of our young people that any member ages 9 to 15 can apply for the 5 day residential Camp experience.

The cost for participants is kept very low - each camper pays no more than $75 of the $400 actual cost of Camp programs. Because many Boys & Girls Club members cannot afford even that fee, scholarships are provided by the Atlanta Kiwanis Club and many other generous donors.

Learning is the heart of a week at Camp Kiwanis, and the program turns every resource into an educational tool. The nearby Bartram Trail is a window into the lives of Georgia's pre Revolutionary inhabitants, both colonists and Native Americans. The Broad River Valley ecosystem becomes a model for understanding the natural environment.

Environmental education at Camp is based on The Ultimate Journey, a program developed in part by Camp Kiwanis' staff in conjunction with Boys & Girls Clubs of America. Through nine weeks of seminars at the Clubs, campers develop a basic knowledge of the natural world. Once at Camp they are immersed in that world, surrounded by the nature that they may have previously only read about.
